I'm tired of migraines {was diagnosed at age 14an I have had 1000s of the monsters - we don't know what my triggers are}. I had one of the worst ones last night/this morning I have had in years. Normally I take Imitrex 50mgs, but, I want in on this new study of migraines, so I can't take anything much stronger than Tylenol for the time being. I can't take NSAIDS [Ibuprofen, Naproxen or Asprin], so that's out. I have done - a cold bandana around my temple, BC powder, Pepsi with Tylenol, Excedrine Migraine with Pepsi, bath, sleep, blackout drapes, sound machine, fan on, blankets, not moving. Did I miss anything??

Please note, migraines are NOT bad headaches, if you have never had one, then please, don't try to tell me how to handle them, migraiens are neurological; I would like to hear from those who have them and how they get rid of them. If I don't get in on this new study, I will go back on drugs, but, I won't know until June or July, so til them, I'm looking for things I haven't tried or thought of.

Can anyone help???

WebMD is a great source. Here is a link directly to migraines.

http://www.webmd.com/migraines-headaches/guide/d...

I have read that in some cases it is due to something that is eaten or even a psychological condition which can be overcome. My mother suffered with them most of her life but also had high blood pressure which contributed to the problem. It is not always a neurological disorder and in most cases is not one. Sometimes it can be treated with drugs but other times drugs have nothing to do with it.

My wife has migraines as a chronic problem. I remember her in the early years of our marriage, spending days laying down in the darkened room. They totally suck. I have had them once in a while, triggered by medication (which I promptly never took again!) but fortunately don't have them chronically.

I don't know if you're willing to try herbal medicine, but half of the two-pronged approach that my wife took was feverfew tincture. Feverfew has actually been lab-tested and does provide some people with relief - on a prophylactic basis. There's the rub - it's not a cure when you have the migraine. You have to take it every day - my wife puts half a dropperful in her morning coffee, and if you can't stand alcohol you can make it up in vinegar - pretty much forever. It takes a while to work, too. After about six months it cut the incidence of migraine down by about three-quarters, and cut the intensity and duration of the remaining ones down as well. But it doesn't help when you're in the throes; it's a long-term relief thing. And if you quit, they slowly ramp back up again. Aside from that, it has no apparent side effects.

The other thing that she did was to get Imitrex for when they're on top of her. Aside from that, I'm afraid that I don't know anything that stops them flat when they're already going on. I know that for some people, taking an 800mg ibuprofen horse pill as soon as you feel a twinge, or during the "silent migraine" pre-headache fuzziness, it can head it off. But that's all I can tell you.

Thanks, so far nothing I can really use, the feverflu stuff, I might have to try. We know my migraines are neurological, I have had numerious CT and MRIs over the last 10 years.

I'm allergic to NSAIDS so taking 800mgs of Ibuprofen will get me in the hosptial and keep me there for a long long time. I can't take any drugs until after I know if I a goign to get itno this new study or not, if I don't, then I will take the drugs, trust me, if not, I will start on new stuff. Til then, I want other options.

Being the Green witch i am i have been looking at herbs.

if found this:

FEVERFEW FOR MIGRAINES.

In the worst headaches this Herb exceeds whatever else is known.... A lady of greate worth and virtue, the mother of the late Sir William Bowyer told me that having in the younger part of her life a very terrible and almost constant Headache, fixed in one small spot and raging at all times almost to distraction, she was at length cured by a maid-servant with this Herb.

The British Herbal (Sir John Hill, 1772)

It is a pity that we lost sight of this invaluable herb for so long but Feverfew has now been re-discovered - through the observation of a number of lay people- thoroughly researched, and established as an effective treatment for migraine; even doctors prescribe it today. The dose is the equivalent of a fresh leaf 1-3 times a day.

If you want anymore info just call.

Blessings

P s. i have herbal cures for everything lol so if anyone else wants any info just memo or ask

I have had chronic migraines most of my life - so bad they would put me down for at least 24 hours if not more, 4+ times a month. Over 2 years ago my doctor put me on Topomax. The side effects are VERY minimal when you get the right dose settled. Too large you get tigles and no sex drive, too small and the migraines still come, even tho less frequent.

I haven't had a migraine in the last 2 years. I am amazed. I didn't believe it would work at all. The Imetrex was worse than the migraine, asprin wouldn't touch it, OTC didn't work at all and herbal was like chewing on candy. Seriously, talk to your doctor about this, it will save your sanity when it comes to severe chronic migraines.

Good luck!

I get migranes since I got shot in the head in Iraq and they are unlike anything else that I've ever experienced. Usually I pop 2 zomig, 3 advil, a shot of tequilla and lock myself in my bedroom with the room as dark as it can get, as cold as I can get it with the fan on. Seems to work for me a bit. But other than that...time.

Cold on the temples doesn't work for me, but cold on the back of the neck makes a huge difference. And cold on the soft palate works even better... try pressing a popsicle of some sort against the upper back of your mouth.

I have to admit that as a migraine sufferer, I've got it pretty good compared to some of what you all describe. But I have to ask, Have you ever seen a chiropractor?

It is so helpful for me. When I feel one coming on, I try to get to the office for an adjustment. Depending on how quickly I get there, it may be gone before I leave, or I still might need something to help the pain. I may even need cold cloth over my eyes and a dark quiet room, but my headaches are far fewer than they used to be. I'm getting a lot less than before. It used to be daily.

My chiropractor also gave me some stretching exercises that have helped a lot too. One of my best friends is a neurologist and she agreed that the exercises were a great idea.

If you do look into chiropractic, try to find one that is not too 'clinical.' The more personal the office environment is, the more relaxed and helpful your visits will be.

Thank you :) I have been told to check out a chiropractor before, I'm kinda scared to go, but at this point, I figure, what the hell. I have done some yoga and meditation, I don't know hhow much they have helped, but, if getting my butt to a chiropracter as soon as one starts will help, I am ALL for it. Its NO fun not being able to function, especailly with a little one; its SUCKS!!!! I will have to make a few calls and get a few recomendations.

My 'normal' regimine for migraines - 3 max strength excedrine migraine with pepsi, cool washcloth, dark dark room, fan on, lots of covers, body pillow to curl up with, another pillow to cover my head, no phones, and TRY to get soem rest.. if its too bad, spend about 20 minutes praying to the porcelin god, then crawling into a bath, then crawling back into bed, and praying some more. If its gone the next day, spend the day getting rid of the rest of it.

My migraines have been daily before, not so much {not able to function or live then}, but now, they are just worse than they were when they were daily, after more than 10 years, you would think I would be use to them {rofl}.

I used to get migraines weekly for 2 or 3 days at a time. Imitrex helped but the warnings were so scary I tried not to take it often. Something that says take one spray if you have a migraine, don't ever ever ever take more than one or you will die, UNLESS you feel it started to go away and then came back in which case take another spray. Erm yikes? I found dipping my hands and arms or whole body in super hot (nearly boiling) water helped. Migraines are often caused (always maybe?) by blood vessels expanding around the brain so heat on extremities pulls that blood pressure away and soothes. Never failed to work for me. Not sure why mine went away in the past few years.
