Pain Addiction (6)

Can someone give me good physiological reasons to explain why pain is so addictive and why it has such a tremendous impact on sexual urges? Why is it that pain gives someone a euphoric sensation that's probably not unlike that of a narcotic "high"? Why is it that pain arouses the sexual appetite and has an almost aphrodesial effect on a person? Why is it that pain is addictive and the more you experience it the more you seem to want? Why is it that you get accustomed to it at a certain level and seem to need it at a higher level in order to get the same euphoric and aphrodesial sensations? Why is it that pain effects some people this way but not others? Why is it that someone elses pain can have a similar euphoric and aphrodesial effect on somebody who's just watching it rather then actually feeling it themselves? Are there sound psychological and physiological reasons for all these things? Can someone explain all of this in a way that makes sense?

Wow. That's a lot of questions all at once.

I can for sure answer at least one. When you are injured your body releases endorphins (happy hormones) to help combat the pain and make you feel better. That's the explanation for pain feeling good.

Perhaps some people have an imbalance (good or bad) that releases larger amounts of endorphins when injured.

What kind of pain are you asking about? Sharp pain, dull pain, slow pain, fast pain? Self inflicted, sexually inflicted, accidental? I think it all varies widely.

Perhaps it becomes sexual because it's taboo and that's a turn-on for many people. I personally believe there is a very very fine line between pleasure and pain but I honestly don't know if I could ever explain it.

Hope this helps.

I don't know what medical reasons cause it but some people are pain sluts, pure and simple, while others stay as far away from it as possible. The mind is very complex and I don't know if anyone really does have a clear cut explanation as to why pain is so exciting to many and causes such exciting and stimulating sexual urges in them. On the same note, I don't know if there is a clear cut explanation as to why Some enjoy causing that pain in another. I think it can be so addictive because sex itself is so addictive. That primal part of the brain comes alive and takes control. Once we get a taste of it, we want more and more and so on.... lol... When it comes to those who watch and get enjoyment from that, I can only say that's why porn is such a lucrative business. People enjoy watching that which is taboo, forbidden, a fantasy come to life before their eyes. Those that would not really want to experience pain get off watching those that do.

Ultimately we know deeply that the other side of every fear is a freedom. Marilyn Ferguson

Well, since I'm the one more into pain than Ma'am.. guess I'll answer this one.. as others have said it is very different and subjective experience.. some people experience a type of pain and go "ewwww, yuck, I'm never going near that again"... me.. at least from my own experience, my reaction tends more towards.. "gee, that was fun, let's try it again".. Everyone has different experiences, and endorphin levels.. Drugs cause your body to release endorphins.. as does intense physical excercise (like the marathon runners, about mile 18 or so.. most of them get "runner's high")

Aphrodisiac affect.. I blame wiring.. some people are just wired to connect pain with pleasure or in some cases.. probably not feel pain, and it's replaced with pleasure... and sometimes I think stuff happens and that wiring gets rewritten or improved upon by experiences(that's part of what I think happened with me)... As for needing more and more .. I don't think you get accustomed to it.. unless, perhaps it's inflicted/experienced without time for your body to clean it out/recycle the endorphins.. then it's like any drug I suppose you build up a tolerance to it.. and it takes larger and larger doses to get the same effect.

As for how can watching someone else experience pain have the same effect on the person watching that experiencing it would.. just from personal experience.. my brain connects the intense scene/suspension/piercing/tattooing with things I've experienced. and replays it.. like it was happening to me at the time.. or at least that's the way I interpret it.

disclaimer:I will freely admit I have a decent pain tolerance.. ok.. decent is probably an understatement.. (I've gotten tattoos on both side of my ribcage, which some people claim is the most painful). I enjoy piercing, tattoos, and what most people consider heavy play. So my opinion may be slanted.

I don't know if it is a good reason but there is actually a psychological disorder that people who gain pleasure from pain have, called sexual masochism. A good place to start with research on sexual masochism is to look in the DSM4. There is also an article online at the following link.

http://www.depression-guide.com/masochism.htm

You may want to look into what is commonly referred to as sub space. Here is an article that explains it better than I ever could. (There have also been a couple of threads on the board about subspace.)

http://mcncirce.com/subspace.html

However, you may want to disregard the part on the “fight or flight” response in that article as it maybe a little dated because according to the American Psychological Association the fight or flight response may only be characteristic of males. Rather women show a tendency to have the “tend or befriend” response. You can read more about that here.

http://www.apa.org/monitor/julaug00/stress.html

Futher, when someone is in pain the body releases an endorphin called dopamine. This gives the body a feel good effect but it is not the same in all people. A masochistic person would probably seek in increase the level of pain so that they will get an increased response to dopamine, because the more the brain the exposed to a chemical the less of a response it will have on it.

Good luck in your understanding of this matter.

I didn't read through all the replies so someone might have already given the same answer. Pain causes endorfins to be released into your system. These have a uforic and calming effect as well as numbing some of the pain. It's a chemical which honestly is treated the same as a drug by your body. The more offten it's induced the higher lvls are required for the same effect. As far as why it's addictive on a psycological lvl is because it inhibits brain function in that it causes you to focus on what is causing the pain. This allows for you to leave the world behind and enter a "sub" trance lvl. People with bi-polar and depression issues generally are very fond of this place. Also the generic main-frame of a women is to wish to be in this sub place. Some women have been more effected by the "conditioning" of normal life and are not able to fall into this sub space as easily. Some can be taken there with a simple sound of a voice. The achieve a constant uforic sub space is very difficult requireing large amounts of trust and consistency, this is generally the reason that some seek out TPE. I think i've gotten off the subject slightly, but I hope I answered your question.

These statements are simply my experience, opinion, and belief.

P.S. My spell check is messing up, typos are possible.

Travis is right... Pain releases endorphins in the body. Laughter releases endorphins as well... so do some drugs.

floaty, high, disconnected, happy.. MMMM natural high.

enjoy it.
