i wonder if anyone can help me with a problem. i have developed an allergy to nickel from prolonged contact with my training collar. It has reached the point where i have had to ask for the collar to be taken off. Now, for the moment, its not a problem as i can wear my leather collar. However, soon i will be getting my permanent collar and i am concerned that i will have an allergic reaction to this. i've done some reserch on this and it would seem that stainless steel or silver would be best. Does anyone else have any experience of this kind of problem? Is it possible to wear a collar 24/7 if you have a nickel allergy?

You do have a couple of options. Unfortunately most stainless steel has nickle in it, unless you get the high grade (surgical?) steel. The other option is titanium, which is used to make eternity/turian collars. Check out the links on the left of the page. Silver is usually OK, but again some people can have an allergic response to it and it can be prohibitively expensive.

Can you combine your leather and steel collars somehow, such that the metal is laying against the leather rather than against your skin? Or perhaps twine something significant around the metal collar so that direct contact with it is minimized?

As others here have given some excellent alternatives, I just thought of one that comes from My work in the Audio/Video field.

There is a material called braided expandable tubing that is used to cover wires & cables to make them look better. It is available in several types of materials, including silicone, and is woven in a mesh that is expandable. It comes in a very wide asortmant of colors and widths and can fit over anything. You can easily change between colors and materials to suit your Masters tastes and it is not allergic.

Here's a link to show you what I mean: http://cableorganizer.com/wire-management/

Hope this helps.

I also have allergies to some metals, and I've found that gold (minimum 14 kt) causes no reaction in my ears. Make sure it's not just gold plated, though. The plating will wear off and you'll end up with whatever's underneath. Best of luck!
