To the Vanillas, a bar code is a meaningless symbol, innocent and innocuous as far as a tattoo goes.

I'm looking at 16th century Arabic Numerals for my SLRN tattoo.

And here i was thinking that the use of multiple exclamation points was a bit silly. ;-)

For grins and giggles (or perhaps not for some) check out how every UPC code (not just these) have a 666 in them. http://www.judaismvschristianity.com/666_in_barc...

Does kinda make you stop and think...

But then, you go and look it up on snopes.com http://www.snopes.com/business/alliance/barcode....

Hi,

Just curious but why would you want to post something just to "get a rise" out of someone?

...and as far as the barcodes go - they are allocated to each individual who registers (just as the registration number is allocated.) They are, indeed, individual and scannable (i.e. with the right equipment you can scan the barcode and get the allocated person's profile page to display on your computer.)

As to whether they are a serious thing or not, they can be taken as seriously or as light heartedly as anyone wants to. Obviously some people take them seriously enough to have them tattooed onto their bodies, just as some people take their registration numbers seriously enough to have them permanently marked onto them too. I'm assuming that these are the people you are trying to "get a rise out of"?

Happybunny -- If you feel that you're a slave absolutely (and not just a slave in relation to one specific person only), then it's probably best not to get a permanent mark "personalized to a single master", as others have mentioned. This also can avoid embarassment and difficulties if your relationship with the particular master who put his personal mark on you ends...

However, I do share some of your puzzlement as to what the appeal of the generic numeric bar-code as a slave marking is -- to me it brings to mind the mid-1980's, when many supermarkets in the United States had a number of shelves devoted to "generic" off-brand items, whose packaging mainly consisted of an unadorned plain white background with the type of product (such "PEAS" etc.) written in a plain black sans-serif font, and accompanied by a prominently displayed barcode.

So for me, bar-codes have strong connotations of institutionalized bureaucracy and generic interchangeability (i.e. lack of personality and individuality) which does not seem to fit well with the nature of a healthy master-slave relationship (I don't see what a lifestyle slave is really supposed to have in common with an interchangeable bar-coded part stored on a shelf in a corporate warehouse).

I wonder how many tattoos could indeed be scanned by standard scanning equipment? From what's been posted here in the past, tattoo artists seem to view a bar-code as a difficult and cumbersome job...

A scannable tattoo is a VERY difficult thing to accomplish. The tolerance for a barcode that's only a 5 cm across is very small. Each bit in each digit (7 bits per digit) works out to be about half a millimeter. So you might have a 6 in your barcode, but if the tattoo artist moves the line over half a millimeter, or the line wanders a bit, then your 6 could become some other digit.

(Pic on Wikipedia explaining UPC codes)

There is a tattoo machine that I've seen that will actually "print out" a tattoo on your arm, but I doubt there's any tattoo parlor out there that has one, since it tends to take the art out of the process.

I can relate to this statement.

For us, our M/s is just what Sir wants, nothing more, nothing less. It involves his thoughts and ideas and to buy into a recognised organisation serves him no purpose.

At one time I would have been overjoyed for him to register me on here and have a number asigned, but on comtemplation I realise it doesn't have any real bearing on who we are, or what we do.

Having said that, we do realise that there are others who want to have thier slaves to have a number, and or a barcode, and if that adds to thier experience, so be it.
