In reference to the OP, I've not managed to get phay to subspace yet, but being the masochist *I* am too, I can get there fairly easily, and find that it depends what music's playing at the time has an affect on the strength of it.. I really don't like anything to earthy or relaxing. Something gutsy, metally, thrashy - unnerving says it all. I stumbled across an album by Norwegian band Burzum called Hlišskjįlf It is listed as ambient darkwave and it is exactly that. The album beautiful with just the slightest hint of menace and is totally hypnotic. I can't say it enhances subspace, that much I do not know, but I do know it calms me right down to the point I find myself lost in it and its rhythms.
